How to protect your body as a barber and a hair stylist

Does your back ever hurt? What about your wrist or hands? Well, if so, mine does also. I have been cutting hair for many years, and based on my experience I have noticed that over the years I have pains in my back, feet, wrist, trapezius muscles and hands.

As far as back braces, I have noticed that the black nylon back support from your local drug store does the trick for me. At one time my right wrist would feel weird after a very busy day at work, so I started wearing wrist support material from the drug store. It needs to be black so all of the hair won't show up on it.

Make sure, for your back, you have an anti-fatigue mat to stand on all day. Avoid wearing non-supportive shoes for long periods during the week, such as dress shoes or boots. These types of shoes tend to hurt the feet and increase your chances of back aches and strains.

If you have spasms or aches in your trapezius or neck muscles, I would definitely advise you to take pain management seriously, because it can get out of control. Take ibuprofen for its anti-swelling effects, and soak in a full bath of hot water with Epsom salt. Heat pads help as well on any part that is in pain.

I took a picture of my back belt and my wrist belt so you can get an idea of what they look like.

This post shares Lee's personal experience. It is not medical advice. If pain keeps coming back, see a doctor.
